Sun Gun Chung

Sun Gun Chung M.D., Ph.D. graduated Seoul National University in 1988 and finished PM&R training in 1992 at the same university hospital. He spent two years (2000-2002) as a visiting scholar in Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University. He has been appointed as a faculty member in Department of Rehabilitation, Seoul National University and Hospital since 1997. He served as the Chairman of his Department from 2011 to 2020. He worked for American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as one of the senior editors of its official journal, PM&R (the purple journal) from 2011 to 2018. He has been devoting himself to development of rehabilitative approaches to degenerative musculoskeletal problems including low back pain, neck pain and pain and dysfunctions of major joints. By integrating motor control training and image-guided interventions, he pursues evidence-based practices to provide long-term solutions for life-long degeneration of mechanical connective tissues such as cartilages, tendons, ligaments, and synovia, which results in one of the most prevalent disabling conditions in rapidly aging societies. He undertakes researches on motor control training for low back pain, stem cell transplantation on injured tendons, and treatment of senile sarcopenia, endeavoring to test innovative treatment options for the conditions. To provide general public with medical information on their own musculoskeletal issues, he makes efforts to communicate and engage with lay people by publishing books and social media activities.
